Lace LOVE...

Speaking of LACE, I just had to share these with you....

These boots are "Deborah Lace" by FRYE, and they are completely & totally FABULOUS!!

I wish I had the $ to add these to my closet, but at the moment, they will remain on the wishlist....but I will watch them to see if they ever go on sale, and then they might just have to be mine!

I've written about FRYE boots before, in
this post, and can't say enough great things about them...they are amazing! This new style is perfect for spring and what we are seeing with LACE!! You can find them at piperlime in this sand color (pictured above) or at revolve clothing in two colors: charcoal or sand. Both of which are equally fabulous, but I think I tend to lean towards the SAND color...which do you prefer? Do you own a pair of FRYEs?? If not, I would say this is a GREAT pair to start with!!

Why we LOVE...

LACE

...so vintage, elegant, sexy, yet sophisticated.....lace is returning to wardrobes as we head into spring fashion!

Maybe I hadn't noticed all of it until recently (while shopping for that perfect all lace wedding dress), but LACE is slowly showing up everywhere... as shells under suit jackets, peeking out of the bottom of those fabulous LBDs,
and even as the main piece in your outfit, like this FABULOUS top from Fossil....I am LOVING it!

A fun lace top, like the one above or this tunic from ModCloth, Let's Lace It Tunic (with just as fabulous a name, as all their items have) is a great way to change up your usual blouse and trousers look. Pair it with your favorite skinny jeans and boots on casual Friday or out for lunch & shopping on Saturday with the girls = perfect! Here is another fabulous, simple lace tank, from urban outfitters. The front detail is so perfect, and then the back is a complete wow! The skirt it is paired with is also fabulous--I just LOVE the whole ensemble!

There are SO many ways to include lace in your wardrobe. Whether it's a simple, sophisticated pair of lace heels peeking out from your favorite black pants, small lace details on your cardigan, or a "vintage-style" lace dress for your next date night, lace can be incorporated into anyone's wardrobe.

Carolina Herrera Lace Corset Dress, $3,490
Gary Pepper Dress, $48
Women's shirts & tops - camis - Lacey top - J.Crew, $695
Lace Cardigan: Buy Jenny Han Clothings, $159
Knitted Berry Lace Back Shrug, $90
lia lace tank, $24
Xhilaration® Juniors Lace Cardigan Sweater - Old Lace : Target, $20
Rose Lace Tights, $24
Pamela Mann Waterlilly Lace Tights - Tights - MyTights.com - The..., $14
Moxsie.com - Aphrodite Pump Black Lace, $75
Lace clutch bag, 90 GBP

The HISTORY of LACE is also extremely interesting to read about...as I searched for the history behind this often pricey and sophisticated textile, I learned that much of what we know about lace before the 17th century is taken from the "clues" in paintings! I particularly loved this quote taken from the art blog, Venetian Red:

lace in its comparatively quiet richness never obtrudes itself and is recognized in its true worth and beauty only by those whose superior taste has trained them to see its value. . .

SO true! Whether it be today, in 2011, or back in the 17th century, anyone could put on loads of jewels and look gaudy or even offensive, but LACE has that beauty and elegance that is rarely overdone. I loved this 19th century fan covered with Chantilly lace....gorgeous! (pictured above)

As far as lace being overdone, it definitely didn't use to be, as years ago lace was considered a luxury because it was made by hand. Thanks to machines that can now make lace, the luxury of it has somewhat decreased. And as I searched through lace fashions, I definitely saw a few items I wouldn't want to be caught dead in and wasn't sure why such an item made it beyond the drawing board, but such it is with all fashio
n....

So remember, as with all things added to your wardrobe, you never want to overdo it! A complete lace outfit, heat to toe, is a fashion don't. Just keep in mind: a little goes a long way. Look for the small details and pieces that really work with your style. It's all about adding to and creating that uniqueness within what you already have, not drastically changing things just because something "new" is in the stores.
And maybe lace isn't for you--perhaps you aren't excited about how it looks, or maybe it's too vintage for your more modern taste. That is completely ok! Not every new style change or addition to fashion is for everyone!

Are you going to add LACE to your wardrobe? I know I can't wait for my
new lace items to arrive!

The Ultimate Necessity...

...is of course the LBD (Little Black Dress to those of you not in the know). It is an ABSOLUTE MUST for every girl's closet!

This is something that I totally recommend SPLURGING on since you will literally be able to wear it forever ~ it NEVER goes out of style!! But, for those of us who are broke as a joke right now (yep - that's me) there are lots of adorable options for under $100.

LBDs under $100

1.Modern Love Dress, $55
2.Sparkle & Fade Shirtdress, $59
3.Gap Bubble dress, $70
4.TFNC TFNC Dress Bow One Shoulder Chiffon Drape at ASOS, $78
5.AE Women's Sweetheart Party Dress (Black), $40

The great thing about a little black dress is that it can be worn to ANY event, especially those occasions where you don't know the dress code. You will always look classy & sophisticated in your LBD. The other great thing is that you can have fun with your accessories!! As a rule of thumb, if you have fun shoes, keep the jewelry simple, or go bold with your jewelry and wear your basic chic black heels. That way, your statement pieces will STAND OUT!

LBDs are also VERY versatile; with just a change of accessories, you can go from Downtown Chic to Uptown Casual.

LBDs

If you do have $$ to spend on a LBD (jealous!!), just keep the following in mind when purchasing:
  • Pick a classic fit, either a sleeveless v-neck or round-neck with a straight skirt that sits right at the knee. This fit will NEVER go out of style, it will always look modern & elegant.
  • If it doesn't fit perfectly, take it to the tailor! Let's face it, it is quite rare to purchase anything off the rack that fits every curve of your body. With the right fit, ANY piece of clothing can make you look like a million bucks - definitely worth the money of tailoring!!
  • Make sure you take care of it! Best thing would be to DRY CLEAN the dress, that way it will keep the black from fading & will keep the dress looking brand new.
Go out and get yourself a LBD so you will be ready for ANY occasion that comes up ~ NO MORE time will be spent thinking...what should I wear??

New Year brings New....

With 2011 just a few weeks in, what will this new year bring for you?

I recently stumbled upon this FABULOUS quote, and couldn't wait to share it:

I think this truly says it all about Fashion and Style....Fashion is out there, and we LOVE to see what's new and what came down the runways, but we can't all wear (nor afford) those runway fashions. We need to take what we love about each look or each designer and make it our own....that then becomes your STYLE!

It's been just over 6 months since our FIRST POST about cleaning out your closet, finding "your brand," and making a fresh start. Sometimes it can be good to do this more than once a year....especially this time of year when the winter here in MN seems to last forever and we all often fall into that winter blues rut.

Why not take advantage of this down time, as we patiently wait for spring, to check out that closet again, re-look at those items you thought you'd hang on to because you might wear them. Have you? Have you made some purchases lately, or received pieces that you love that could replace some of those older items in your wardrobe?? I TRY to think about how many pieces I have added to my closet and then take out at least half of that number in order to keep a wardrobe that I love and feel good about! You don't want such an overwhelming wardrobe that you don't even know where to begin when choosing your outfit each day.....or, well, that really wouldn't be all that bad??!! Anyways.....however large or small your wardrobe (& closet) may be, you want to LOVE EVERYTHING IN IT!

Speaking of other NEW things for this new year, I recently also found a FABULOUS new website/blog/artist. Her name is Brittany Fuson, and she is an artist of fashion! She blogs about new fashions along with her own drawings of them! (pictured right) LOVE it!! She does custom work, and I am planning to send her some pictures in the future for her to "re-create"!! (...Perhaps after my upcoming fall wedding!!!)

Anyways, she also has a fashion newsletter, "In Our Shoes," that she and a friend, Kimberly, a wardrobe stylist who also has her own website, collaborate on & send out. If you send her an email, you can sign up to receive it. I just received her January newsletter and LOVED it! She and Kimberly wrote about their "STYLE RESOLUTIONS"--which I thought was a FABULOUS idea!!

They both talked about wearing high heels more often and finding reasons to get "dressed up"--LOVE that! So after reading theirs, I was inspired to write my own...

One FASHIONISTA's STYLE RESOLUTIONS for 2011:

1. DRESS UP more often....(I've also said this before, but never stick to it...maybe now that it's in writing I'll actually do it!) I have so many fabulous dresses and clothes that are sometimes "too dressy" to wear as a teacher, so I will try to make dates with my sisters, girlfriends, or fiance to go out and wear those great pieces!!
2. Really think about an item before purchasing = less impulse buying! With planning a wedding and just trying to save more money, I think I need to be less impulsive when it comes to a pair of $250 boots or $175 jeans. Take the time to think about if I really need it, before I buy it!
3. Enjoy the clothes that I have & change it up a bit....pair up pieces that I haven't put together before and create a "new" outfit...then it almost feels like I'm wearing something NEW! I'm too likely to just wear the same couple outfits almost on a "rotation"....I need to spruce it up a little!!
4. SPARKLE for 2011. My sisters & I decided that we are going for a little sparkle in 2011. Especially if you ended 2010 on a not so fabulous note, adding more spunk and sparkle to your wardrobe each day just makes you smile more and feel a little better about each day. With all the sequins and sparkle out there, this one is easy-whether it's more "bling" in your jewelry (like this fabulous bracelet from J.Crew-pictured below) or sequins on your sweater-anyone can pull it off....just don't overdo it!

SO....as you take another look at your closet/wardrobe, maybe take some time to write up your own STYLE RESOLUTIONS for 2011.
It's actually more fun than you think.....and KEEP THEM in a place where you can pull them out 12 months from now and see how well you did following them!!

Here's to a FABULOUS 2011, full of great FASHION!!

Shopping for those PERFECT GIFTS...

...can be a complete CHALLENGE sometimes.

For some people on your "list" you can walk in a store, or hit that one website, and you find it--the one item they will immediately fall in love with. With others, it can be the hardest few weeks--as you search and search and can't quite put together that "perfect" gift.

So here are a few of our favorite places, or "go-to" gifts, websites, and stores that always seem to help us create the most amazing gift for that fabulous person on your list!

LISTEN
As the holidays are approaching, listen to the comments that your friends (and those who you will be buying gifts for) are saying. Is there something that they've always wanted, but never gotten. Or are they out of their favorite __________. Or perhaps it's those perfect flair paper mate pens that they love that keep disappearing.... Those of us who teach know how amazing these writing instruments truly are! A four pack, or the fabulous 16 pack, is the perfect gift-an item you know they love and will use, every day!
Pay attention to what they point out when you are shopping with them. What catches their eye in a store window, and what they longingly stop and look at 3 times, finally try on, but decide that they can't afford right now.
These are those items that will become the perfect gift.

GIVE SOMETHING YOU WOULD LOVE TO RECEIVE
One way to think about buying gifts is what would you like to find "under the tree." Especially when shopping for your close girlfriends, sisters, or your mom, think about what is on your list and that may lead you to the perfect item. If there is a purse you've been lusting after or an amazing necklace you've been dying to own...maybe they would love it, or there may be an item similar that would be perfect...and perhaps then you can purchase that one item for yourself as well. I can never seem to keep my holiday shopping solely for others...there are always those few items that seem to end up in my "shopping cart" that are for Me....but who doesn't do that, right??!!

MAKE IT FUN
Another rule I always keep in mind while shopping is to think of things that people wouldn't necessarily spend their $ on. There are always those fun, unique items that people love, but often think twice about before they buy--saying, "do I REALLY need this?" And in most cases, they decide it's not necessary. Holidays (& other special occasions involving gift-giving) are the time to buy and give those items. Maybe it's one of those purse hangers (pictured above) that you've seen others with, have always secretly wanted, but never gone out and bought for yourself. Give one to all your girlfriends or fill your sisters' stockings with one--they're fun and so practical! Or maybe it's that hand-warmer mug that is so unique and yet "functional." Fill it with a coffee shop gift card and/or her favorite tea, and it's perfect! Maybe she's finally got her own new place and you can help add to her holiday decorating by finding her a fun ornament for her Christmas tree or a holiday "centerpiece" for her new coffee table. When searching for these unique gifts, check out The Afternoon, at the Mall of America, the Bibelot or Patina (both with several locations)--these stores are filled, from corner to corner, with fun, unique and interesting items-perfect for the gift-giving season! (ALL three of these stores have items available ONLINE as well!)

SHOP LOCAL
I find that whenever I can give someone a one of a kind item, or something designed/created by a local artist, they love it even more. Knowing that no one will have this same item makes it even that much more special. In the Twin Cities, we are SO lucky to have so many fabulous local designers and artists--in all areas. The possibilities for unique gifts are endless...you just have to FIND them! I LOVE LOVE LOVE searching on ETSY for handmade, and often local gifts. Etsy now even makes it EASIER to find MORE items that fit what you're looking for....the Taste Test. You begin by choosing whether you are shopping for a guy or a gal, and then they show you 6 pictures. Out of those 6 you choose the one you love the best-or click on the button that says "I don't like any, show me more"--this continues for a few screens until you finish-and end up with pages of items including and related to those that you picked-how FUN!! I could do this forever! SO...using what you know about the person you are shopping for, you can find a gift that is completely unique and "just right" for them!

Also, check out the local boutiques in your neighborhood. I ALWAYS seem to find fun and fabulous gifts--they may be a little more higher priced, as many boutiques carry the local designers, but it's so worth it--especially knowing you are often purchasing one-of-a-kind pieces and supporting local designers/artists! I love St. Paul and all of the local shops along Grand Ave...Picky Girl and Karma are two of my favorites. PRIMP is a new store to the neighborhood, on Selby & Dale--with fabulous items all under $100--check it out!!

PERSONALIZE IT
Another way to create that perfect gift is to make it personal. Whether it's finding that initial charm necklace or monogrammed ring they've always wanted, or it's putting together a collage of pictures in a frame... things that have memories are always more meaningful and fun to give. Creating a scrapbook of a trip you went on together, or a "shadow box" with black and white photos from when you were younger and now your older, much more polished selves is an amazing way to show how much someone means to you. All you need are the right pictures and a little "craft time" and you've got it made! There are also so many ways to use programs right on your computer, such as iPhoto, where you can design and create a book (with words and YOUR pictures) in minutes--for only $25--and it'll last forever. Or, find an item that shows their love for their city or a place they have traveled. These city-themed totes are super fun and, of course, eco-friendly! You can choose from almost 30 locations and several styles. These are perfect to carry rolled up in your purse for those unexpected, yet frequent, stops at Target!

PLAN B
When you just can't seem to find that one item that is perfect, go with plan B: a GIFT CARD. Even though it doesn't seem as personal, if you give a gift card to their favorite store, you know they will use it to buy something they love. Sometimes, as with shopping at any time of year, there just isn't anything in stores that you love. With a gift card, you can "save" it for that one item you finally splurge on--and how fun is it to use!! LOVE it. Gift cards to places for a service are also fun to get--a manicure & pedicure or a massage are things that many people don't like to spend $$ on, but when it's paid for, it's so much more fun! So even though a gift card may not seem as exciting of a gift, it can often be one of the best items to receive. I just love loading my wallet up after the holidays with all my gift cards-waiting to find the perfect item or time to use each one!!

Whatever it may be that you end up giving to each of your siblings, friends, co-workers, parents, and others on your list....remember it's more about the time spent together and celebrating the season. Don't let the shopping and creating of that "perfect" gift stress you out...and keep in mind that it's not about how much $$ you spend, but the thought that you've put into the gift and the time shared when exchanging those gifts. (Even if it does involve having to wear an "ugly Christmas sweater"!!!)

CELEBRATE, have FUN, and of course, LOOK GOOD, as all Fashionistas always do!!

Dressing for the Holidays

With the holidays approaching you may be dreading the decision of what to wear to all those holiday events.

Do you go out and buy an outfit for each event, buy one new item to wear to all of the events, or can you p
ut together something from the choices in your closet??
Depending on your budget, it is easier than you might think to put together an outfit worthy of any holiday event!

GLITZ & GLAMOUR

A great way to determine what to wear is to think “old Hollywood” when dressing for the holidays. Bring back old time glamour and elegance. Your dress should accentuate your figure & make you FEEL as good as you look! Bring out your fur, stoles, little short jackets, or your tuxedo blazer. A sequined bolero jacket or cardigan, a velvet blazer, or a satin skirt can be the perfect wardrobe essential for holiday dressing.

Just remember not to go overboard. You don't want to be dressed in sequins head to toe (just like you wouldn't do with animal print)!

A holiday party is also a time to get away from the typical cocktail dress and wear a pair of wool shorts or tuxedo trousers. Pair them with a sequined cardigan, a shimmery or tuxedo blazer, dark tights and your favorite pair of heels... Add your statement jewelry pieces and an evening clutch and you're ready to go! But if shorts or pants just isn't your style....finding that amazing dress isn't so hard either...

THE DRESS

If your budget has no limit....you can go out and buy any number of items--I wish this was my status--where should you go & what should you get?
I LOVE this fun & fabulous icicle shift dress from J.Crew. It is so fun, and unique-you would definitely stand out from the crowd in this!! BUT....it comes at a high price! If you are one who looks fabulous in green, like us redheads, this AMAZING jewel toned jade dress (again, from J.Crew) is a bit more affordable and would assure that you stand out from the crowd.

If you can afford to buy a new dress, but have a limit to what you can spend, there are many options out there. Anthropologie's dance away dress is a new take on the little black dress that can be worn to any type of holiday party. Love the uniqueness of the skirt details--add any fun shoes & clutch and you're set! Anthropologie has several dresses ranging from $130-$400...click here to find the one that's perfect for you!

Can you get a dress for under $100? Of course! This lace scallop dress, from Ann Taylor LOFT, is fabulous. Lace is big this fall/winter, and the black lace is dressy and festive! Add some
dark tights, or tall boots, some fun jewelry, and you're ready to walk out the door.
ModCloth is a great website with pages & pages of dresses at very affordable prices, such as the one shoulder mine all mine dress--love it! There are so many more, and with just as interesting "names"...check them out here!

THE ACCESSORIES
If you can't afford to purchase a new dress for the holidays, you can easily work with what's in your closet by adding the right accessories!

Adding some statement jewelry is a great way to add interest to your "go-to" little black dress (LBD). As always, J.Crew is a great place to find fabulous, sparkly, statement jewelry. I love the ribbon (and silk) wrapped crystal bangles, and at only $39.50, it's fairly affordable. The olive moss green would stand out when paired with your LBD.
The silk-ribboned multi chain necklace would make a statement, and gives that layered look with only one piece. It's already on sale, and J.Crew is constantly putting out EXTRA 30% or 25% off of sale & free shipping, so buy now and save even more!! Ann Taylor LOFT is again another great place for statement-making jewelry!

Of course, our FAVORITES for AMAZING jewelry, realia by jen (etsy shop for realia) & Sheer Addiction are the perfect place to find that one piece that you can be guaranteed no one will be wearing! We LOVE that!!!

No matter what it is you choose to wear, as long as you FEEL BEAUTIFUL you will have an amazing time. Good luck finding that perfect new holiday dress or the right accessories....so that you SPARKLE & stand out wherever your holiday plans take you!
